Your Other Set of Goals

Published on October 2, 2015

You're on a beach, with crystal clear waves lapping at your feet.

Above you, a palm tree provides the perfect amount of shade, and the old volcanoes rise steeply behind you. You can hear the songs of birds and chattering of monkeys in the jungle, but you can also hear the tinkling of glass and  laughter.

You take another sip of your island drink, close your eyes, and let out a contented sigh. This is paradise.

So how do you get here?

The Two Sets of Goals of Business Owners

As a business owner, you've got two dreams. The first one is the same that all business owners have. The second isn't so straightforward.

First Goal: Grow Your Business

Doesn't matter what industry you're in - from lawn mowing to residential cleaning - if you own your own business, you want to make that business grow.

This is the primary goal of most business owners. Growth usually incorporates several different elements in the field service industry:

These are noble goals, and at Service Autopilot, we care about helping our members reach these goals. Heck, we write several posts a week geared towards helping you grow your business.

But there is another set of goals that are equally important for business owners - and these goals depend on who you are.

Second Goal: Be Happy

Right now, in front of me, I have a list of things I want to do and places I want to see.

A trip to Europe is high on my list.

So is a poker game with my friends.

When you're a business owner, you work hard. Harder than most people. It's important to not lose sight of why you're working. Five years from now, if you find yourself still working hard - and you haven't taken a single day, or a single weekend off - you might have lost sight of why you got into this business in the first place.

Happiness is good for your health. Everyone needs a break sometimes, whether that means taking your kids to the Zoo on Saturday, or booking a flight to the Bahamas a year from now.

Here's how you can focus on that other set of goals for your business, right now.

Make your own list of things you've always wanted to do. Start as small as you can (grabbing a drink with your buddy), and work your way up to the really big things. This list will give you a great perspective on what's important to you, or what you could strive for.

Maybe this is the weekend you finally take some time, and do something that makes your life better. You deserve it.
