The Basics of Growing Your Cleaning Company

Published on March 22, 2019

“I’ve been trying to grow my cleaning business, but nothing seems to be working. I don’t know what I should do.”

Growing any business is difficult… and what’s even more difficult is that every industry is different… just like every business is different.

Your goals, priorities, processes and even marketing all vary.

Bottom line: no one “formula” is the same.

This article is written specifically for the cleaning industry. It will show you:

  • How to set goals
  • What processes you should set into place
  • Marketing for the cleaning industry
  • How to manage your cleaning company’s reputation
  • Resources that’ll help you

Finding the right balance of strategies is vital to the growth of your cleaning company. Since no one cleaning company is the same, it’s important for you to customize these strategies for your own business.

Set Goals

We make goals for pretty much everything in our lives:

  • Fitness
  • Diet
  • Lifestyle
  • Relationships
  • Career
  • Education

Why do we do it?

The answer to this is quite simple: to improve.

If we’re making life goals to improve ourselves, it only makes sense that we’d set them for the companies we own as well.

I really can’t stress how important this strategy is for your growth.

When you don’t set goals, it’s harder to:

  • Track progress
  • See areas that have improved
  • Find areas that need to be improved
  • Keep up both you and your team’s morale (because you don’t know what’s going horrible or well)

While this may seem like a trivial strategy, it’s ingrained deep into your cleaning company… or any company at all for that matter.

When you set goals, look at:

Find out where you want to improve, and set those goals! I recommend doing this at the end of each quarter (typically, this means every 3-4 months).

You’ll review the hit and missed goals, and then you’ll set the ones for the next quarter. Don’t forget to keep track of numbers throughout the quarter, so that you don’t have to do as much work when you review.

Get Processes into Place

We have a process for so many things in our lives.

We’ve made them for:

  • Our morning routine
  • Our drive to and from work
  • The way we cook
  • The way we clean
  • The way we work
  • The way we learn
  • The way we communicate

We do it, because these processes create order. This order ensures we maintain control and avert chaos… which is exactly why you need them in your cleaning company.

So it makes sense that every service industry company needs to have processes for practically everything… especially in the cleaning industry.

You’ll need to start processes for:

… And the list goes on… and on… and on…

When you don’t set processes into place:

  • You lose control of your company
  • Not all clients are treated the same
  • It creates chaos
  • Your team members don’t always know what they should be doing

No one should have any question whatsoever about their job (at least not on a daily basis). There needs to be rules and procedures put into motion. This will make you, your team and your clients much happier - and give them a sense of peace about where they stand.

Start Marketing

Marketing is literally everywhere we turn:

  • Social media
  • Google
  • Billboards
  • Commercials
  • Product placement in stores
  • Product placement in shows and movies

This is why marketing is SO important for your cleaning company’s growth… ANY company’s growth.

Marketing helps you:

  • Save money on advertising
  • Find new team members
  • Find new leads
  • Find new clients
  • Upsell current clients
  • Encourage reviews
  • Engage with leads and clients

As someone that’s a Public Relations and Marketing Specialist… I could literally keep going on FOREVER about the benefits of proper marketing, but I’ll spare you the long, drawn out, humdrum talk and only tell you this - JUST DO IT.

You can market by:

  • Managing social media accounts (at least Facebook - Instagram may also be useful)
  • Moderating comments, shares and reviews on social media
  • Placing Facebook Ads (Instagram also does ads)
  • Sharing valuable content with your leads and clients
  • Leave behinds

… And that brings me to my next point - reputation management.

Reputation Management

I’m a Marketer… so obviously, I’m going to try to sell you on this, because I’ve personally seen this strategy alone STRIKE GOLD!

You can manage your reputation by:

  • Moderating social media interactions (both the good and bad)
  • Addressing client problems
  • Asking for referrals from your happiest clients
  • Addressing any and all reviews (both on social media and other sites)
  • Offer client referral programs (discounts)
  • Offer employee referral programs (money is the best incentive here)
  • Community service
  • Donations to charities

Your cleaning company gets new leads, clients AND team members through your reputation. SO MANAGE IT. Make sure what people are saying about you is actually good. Create a positive name for yourself that embodies your cleaning company’s branding.

You can do that by proving to them that your cleaning company is worth their time and money.
